I painted this plein aire piece from a balcony on an island in Oslo Sound, Norway. Raindrops hit the paper as I painted. Later, I discovered that the humidity of the air had warped the whole Arches watercolor block I was using!

We stopped at this lighthouse on a spring trip to the Oregon coast. I did a plein aire pencil drawing on the spot and developed the painting over the next year. At that time, the originally black accents decorating the building had weathered to green and contrasted perfectly against the red roofs. My goal for this painting was to express the expansive atmosphere of the shore and feeling of protection and guidance a lighthouse provides.
